Sultanate of Oman: Double win

Veolia Water's expertise has been chosen both on the municipal and industrial markets, in the Sultanate of Oman.

PAEW, the Public Authority for Electricity and Water responsible for water and power supply in eight of the nine regions in Oman, has awarded to Veolia Water a 5-year contract to provide co-managed water services.

The contract targets improvements in the management of facilities - grid outputs among other - and extension of the drinking water supply in the Sultanate, in particular via small-scale desalination plants in rural areas.

Veolia Water will provide PAEW with skilled operational staff to oversee operations, along with experts dedicated to specific projects (IT systems, documentation, operational performance. etc.).

On behalf of the Public Authority PAEW, Veolia Water will co-manage the water services for a total of 2.3 million people (including the capital Muscat), that is around 70% of the total population of the Sultanate.

The State-owned Company MISC (Majis Industrial Services Company) has also selected Veolia Water, through Azaliya Water Services(1), to set up a 6-year "Strategic Alliance Partnership" to provide water services to the Port of Sohar in Oman.

This contract covers the operation and maintenance of existing water utilities:

  • seawater intake facility (SWIF, 8 million m³/day),
  • cooling seawater supply system (60,000 m³/h for a 15 km-network),
  • process water supply system for industrial uses (32,000 m³/day),
  • drinking water network (8,000 m³/day) and domestic effluents collection system.

The contract further encompasses the operation of future facilities planned by MISC, and a "Strategic Management Support".

Seureca, the international consulting engineering subsidiary of Veolia Environnement, will contribute to the "Strategic Management Support" aspect by providing experts in water utilities and deliverables.

(1) Azaliya is the joint company developed by Veolia Water and Mubadala Development Company to build up a strategic and long term partnership gathering all water and sanitation activities of Veolia Water portfolio in the Middle East and North Africa.

A few years after the contract awarded in 2007 for the development and operations of the Sur Reverse Osmosis Desalination (capacity: 80,000 cubic meters per day) and the management contract with Haya Water awarded in 2006, these two new contracts are a clear indication of the trust that Veolia Water has built in the Sultanate of Oman.
