Industrial platform - Port-Jérôme, France All Industries

The client

The Port-Jérôme industrial platform, established on the Seine estuary, is part of the Rouen - Port-Jérôme - Le Havre industrial-harbor complex.

Over 80 companies, mainly specializing in refining (ExxonMobil) and chemicals (ExxonMobil Chemical France, Lanxess Elastomers, Sodes, etc.) are based in Port-Jérôme.

The Syndicat mixte of Port-Jérôme (SMI Port-Jérôme) and its representatives have led the platform's industrial planning and development since 1961.

The client's needs

Until 1972, water supply for industrial concerns in Port-Jérôme was based on pumping from groundwater. Intensive pumping led to saltwater intrusion from the estuary into the aquifer.

To preserve water resource, SMI Port-Jérôme initiated the construction of a plant to produce industrial water from surface water. SMI Port-Jérôme needed a specialist service provider capable of operating the plant (capacity: 150,000 m3/day i.e. 40 MGD).

The CODAH (the agglomeration community of Le Havre), in charge of water distribution in the industrial-harbor complex of Le Havre, also wanted to be connected to SMI Port-Jérôme's production plant.

Our solution

In 1972, SMI Port-Jérôme chose Veolia Eau to operate and maintain the industrial water production plant.

Treated water of consistent quality travels through 32km (20 mi) of pipes to supply the process water production facilities of:

  • 23 industrial sites in Port-Jérôme, including Exxon Mobil, Esso Raffinage, Lanxess Elastomers, United Chemicals, etc.;
  • the CODAH, which manages industrial water distribution to a number of companies at Le Havre industrial-harbor complex, such as Millennium Inorganic Chemicals, EDF, Yara, Eliokem, Eramet, Sedibex, Lubrizol, Total, Renault, etc.

To secure industrial water supply, plant's staff performs stand-by duty and most of the distribution systems have been doubled.
