M-Real - Alizay, France Pulp and paper

The client

The Finnish group M-Real is one of the leading producers and suppliers of paper and paperboard in Europe. M-real's core business areas are Consumer Packaging, Publishing, Commercial Printing and Office Papers (approximately six million tons per year).

On its Alizay site (Eure), M-Real produces approximately 300,000 tons of mixed hardwood kraft pulp and 300,000 tons of fine paper.

The site employs approximately 500 people.

The client's needs

  • Secure boiler feed water production:

To feed its two boilers, M-Real Alizay uses water produced by resin-based carbonate removal, followed by demineralization. As the supply of steam is essential to the paper making process, there must be no interruption in the production of demineralized water. Existing facilities did not provide sufficient security for the production process.

  • Avoid investing in new water treatment plants:

M-Real's financial strategy is to not tie up assets in this kind of utility.

Our solution

In response to M-Real Alizay's needs, Veolia Water (Genesys® service) installed in March 2001 the following equipment upstream of the existing facilities and leased it to M-Real:

  • two modular dual media filters (sand/anthracite)
  • two modular reverse osmosis units, each with a capacity of 45 m3/h

Veolia Water guarantees uninterrupted operation of the treatment facility in particular through its remote monitoring system.

Since January 2005 Veolia Water leases and operates a new pre-treatment and reverse osmosis solution with a capacity of 25m3/h to feed a bleaching line.
