The client

The Shanghai Michelin Warrior Tyre Co. (Michelin) is a joint venture between the world tire giant, Michelin, and China's Shanghai Tyre and Rubber Co., Ltd.


On its Bao Shan plant, near Shanghai, the company produces radial tires for sedans, trucks and buses, among others.
The plant is expected to have an annual production of eight million radial tires for sedans and 15,000 tons of wire for tires by the year 2010.

The client's needs


Faced with this expected increase in the plant activity, the Shanghai Michelin Warrior Tyre Co. had the following needs :

  • analyse wastewater discharge quality problems and tackle environmental compliance issues,
  • build new industrial water, wastewater and cooling water treatment facilities and improve operational reliability,
  • transfer existing personnel engaged in water and wastewater activities,
  • integrate Environmental Management System (EMS) procedures and reach ISO 14001 accreditation.

Our solution

Veolia Water signed a design, build and operate contract with Michelin for its Bao Shan process water and wastewater treatment facilities.

The systems included in Veolia Water's scope of activities comprise :

  • a new feed water pipeline designed to deliver up to 100 m3/hr,
  • a new plant for filtered water (up to 1,000 m3/day), demineralised water (31 m3/day) and cooling tower make-up water (20 m3/day),
  • an ELGA™ water purification unit for the laboratory, delivering up to 40 liters/day, or as required,
  • a new plant wastewater treatment plant (469 m3/day) including the following treatment units : aeration system, coagulation /flocculation / clarification and sand filtration,
  • two specialty chemicals dosing systems to regulate the quality of make up and circulation water, in two independent cooling water circuits.

Eight Michelin employees, engaged on the existing water and wastewater facilities, were transferred to Veolia Water.
