Honolulu - United States

Minimize cost to taxpayers.

Our Client

City and County of Honolulu

A popular tourist resort in the Hawaiian Islands. It has a rapidly increasing population and many industrial customers including a refinery owned by Chevron and a power station.

Veolia Water's solution

The City of Honolulu entered into a 20-year partnership with Veolia Water North America to design, build, and operate a multifaceted 45,000 cubic meters/day water reclamation facility. Investments were spread out over a 20-year period and specialized water management was outsourced. Therefore, the public-private partnership with Veolia Water saved the city and taxpayers millions of dollars in construction, maintenance and operating costs.
Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies delivered the design and build portion of this contract through its NAWS subidiary out of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania*.

The contract included upgrading existing wastewater treatment and installing a new secondary sewage reclamation plant to produce water for irrigation and industry. Continuous Microfiltration and Reverse Osmosis produce high quality cooling and boiler water (Total Dissolved Solids of < 38 mg/L, as opposed to > 200 mg/L in city drinking water).

The availability of appropriate water saves water treatment costs for the power plant and the Chevron Refinery.

The contract also includes process guarantees, water marketing and distribution through a 24 km distribution system on behalf of the municipality.

* Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies provides water and wastewater solutions in North America through its 500 employees in 5 subsidiaries.
