MD Papier - Platting, Germany Pulp and paper

The client

MD Papier, Myllykoski Corporation, with its production facilities in Germany is among the leading international manufacturers of coated, wood-containing rotogravure papers.

The Plattling site with an annual capacity of 350,000 tons, is a an innovative player in the field of ultra light printing papers (ULWC).

MD Papier in Plattling operates one of the most advanced waste paper recycling plants in Europe including the recycling of difficult-to-process materials such as labels from the beverage industry.

The client's needs

Due to more intensive bleaching of mechanical pulp for the production of improved LWC-paper, MD Papier was faced with an increase in wastewater loads and had the following needs:

  • upgrade the one-step biological wastewater treatment plant
  • increase serviceability and optimize performance of the industrial water and wastewater plants
  • optimize investment and operating costs

Our solution

MD Papier awarded Veolia Water a contract for the expansion of the Plattling wastewater treatment plant up to a capacity of 14,400 m3/day, with a maximum load of 17 tons COD/day.

The expansion performed by Veolia Water includes:

  • two moving-bed bioreactors (total volume of 2,274 m3) and a new cooling system with two cooling towers
  • upgrade and extension of the remote monitoring system for the water facilities

MD Papier also awarded Veolia Water the management of the wastewater treatment plant, as well as the operation and maintenance of the industrial water production plant (screening, sand-filtration, chlorination, pumping station).

Four MD Papier employees were transferred to Veolia Water.
