Environmental Indicators

The environmental performance of Veolia Water is managed by the Environmental Management System. This is a set of management procedures used to achieve the global goals set by the Veolia Environnement Group.

This performance is then measured using environmental reporting carried out by the Technical Department of Veolia Water.

Baseline figures (such as the volume of water produced and wastewater treatment efficiency etc.) are provided by all of Veolia Water's operating companies around the world then consolidated according to region and country.

All business units work using the same modus operandi so that reporting data are homogenous.

Indicators are then constructed. The aim of these indicators is to illustrate Veolia Water's performance in the most objective way possible.

* The efficiency ratio of Veolia Water drinking water networks in the European Union remains greater than 80%, in line with the commitment made in 2002 and carried forward until 2011. This illustrates the high performance level in mature markets. Development in countries in which water services require major upgrades over several years is incompatible with commitments taken on a global scale. Thus in 2007, the addition of a new contract for a city of 1.5 million residents with an efficiency ratio of 15.4% has reduced our worldwide efficiency by 2% that would have been equal to 78.5% and therefore higher than 2006, if this contract had not been included.

** Veolia Water has developed a composite indicator that better reflects the performance of treatment systems used, taking account of and weighting different forms of pollution, following the approach used by water agencies in France. The chemical oxygen demand (COD), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and suspended solids (SS) are thus included alongside the biological oxygen demand (BOD), to represent a global efficiency ratio.

Methodology

Corresponding with key GRI indicators which are based on version 3 of the Guidelines, referred to as G3.

Data required under the French New Economic Regulations Act (Nouvelles Régulations Économiques) can be found in the Reference Document 2006: section 17.2 for corporate information; section 6.3.3 for environmental information.

Some indicators have been certified by an external agency (see CERT column in the Report)
