Climate Change and Energy Optimization

Adapting to climate change

Veolia Water is committed to adapting to climate change and develops solutions to assist its municipal and industrial clients.

Veolia Water promotes combating the waste of water and energy resources and of chemical products. To achieve this, Veolia Water:

  • organizes campaigns to raise awareness regarding water usage
  • carries out repairs and optimal maintenance of water mains

Likewise, Veolia Water adapts its wastewater management to changes in climate:

  • by optimizing the operation of sewage mains during extreme rainy weather
  • by anticipating and managing sewage mains during intense heatwaves, primarily in urban areas (odours, corrosion, etc)

Veolia Water promotes and develops alternative water resources:

  • By recharging aquifers,
  • By recycling treated wastewater for non-domestic use and reusing rainwater,
  • By desalinating seawater and brackish water in conjunction with a renewable energy source.

Energy optimization

Veolia Water's operations produce little direct greenhouse gas emissions. On the other hand, sophisticated treatments, made necessary by worsening pollution and the raising of quality standards, have seen a rise in the energy intensiveness of treating water.

In this context Veolia Water is working on:

  • Energy optimization of facilities (including desalination facilities) such as initiatives on pumping, optimizing reservoir aeration and heat recovery;
  • Producing renewable energy such as converting biogas from the digestion of sewage sludge or by recovering the potential energy of water through the use of micro turbines or by pressure exchange;
  • Improving transport modes for employees through promoting the use of clean cars.
